PART TIME 200hr YOGA TEACHER TRAINING ON MAUI: Feb 1st – Aug 18th 2019

ALOHA AND NAMASTE!

A 4 week immersive training is a highly effective and transformational way of taking your yoga practice to the next level but it can be logistically, physically, and financially challenging to take so much time away from work and family to make your dream a reality.

But as we know from our asana practice, going slower and giving ourselves time to learn, understand, reflect and integrate our experiences can be just as, if not more, effective in going deeper. This is one of the real benefits of a part time training, while addressing some of the challenges mentioned above.

This program, which runs over 6.5 months, is carefully designed to meet the 200 hours required by Yoga Alliance for you to be certified and register as 200hr Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT-200).

This training will be held at MAHA YOGA , in our beautiful studio right in the heart of Paia on Maui's famous North Shore.  Our studio is full equipped with blankets, bolsters, straps, chairs, blocks, sandbags - all the tools of transformation we need to go deeply into the practice in a way that is safe, healing and empowering.

We will meet 3x/week:

  • Tuesday and Thursday evenings (5.30pm - 7pm)
  • Saturday's 10.3am - 12pm

On the first weekend of each month we will have a "weekend intensive":

  • Friday 5.30 – 7.30pm – Study of key sutras from the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali
  • Sat 10.30 – 4.30 – Anatomy, Practice Techniques, Teaching Methodology
  • Sun 10.30 – 12.30 – Restorative Yoga & Pranayama

Over the course of the training there will be an additional 20 "Non contact" hours which will include some reading, handing in a few small assignments and most importantly, observing some of Karin's public classes.  This is an amazing opportunity not just to develop the skill of observation crucial to teaching well but also provides immense insight into how bodies, including your own, move in an asana practice.  All this is designed to deepen your understanding and application of what we explored in our classes and weekend workshops.

The last 2 weeks of the training is where you will step more confidently into the “seat of the teacher” as you guide your fellow students through a full practice (practicum hours), showing your understanding and application of all you have learnt over the months.  Although this class is counted as your designated practicum hours you will actually begin "teaching" and guiding your fellows students after the first 8 weeks of the training!  You will be required to present your Sequence (Vinyasa Krama) prior to your practicum to Karin for initial feedback and guidance.

Each practicum session will be recorded for you and will be followed with a review session by your peers and Karin, providing invaluable insight for everyone involved,  into how to refine and enhance our teaching skills.  This will include subjects such as effective sequencing, cultivating your teaching voice, the use of precise, appropriate and inclusive language, giving adjustments, the use of props and variations, sharing of Yogic philosophy and creating an inviting, respectful and inspiring class environment.  Even should you not wish to start teaching immediately after you have finished the course I have found that teaching others is a highly effective way of helping you to retain all the information and experiences you received over the months. Guiding others through the practice also cultivates observational skills, confidence in speaking publicly and in leading groups.  These are skills we can take into any aspect of our work and lives!

In the “Business of Teaching Yoga” workshops we use group discussions and journaling exercises to explore the Role of the Yoga Teacher today and how the spiritual teachings can help to clarify and support our personal and teaching values, life vision and goals.

You will leave this training with a solid understanding of how to cultivate a personal practice and be able to move authentically and confidently into the role of Yoga Teacher, laying the foundation for a highly rewarding career in the health and wellness field.

You will fly into Kahului Airport on the island of Maui

You will need to arrange for either a taxi or personal car hire to make your way to Banyan Tree Retreat Centre in Makawao, 20 minutes from the airport.

Please make sure that you arrive by noon to settle in . Welcome and Orientation is at 1pm

Our Retreat Centre is a 10 minute drive from the North Shore beaches of Paia, 15 minutes from Kahului City Centre and 5-10 minutes drive to Makwao Town Centre. I would suggest hiring a car for your weekly day off. You can always make arrangements to share this cost with some of your fellow students! You can visit the Kula Farmers Market and Mana Foods in Paia to stock up for your weeks supplies and then use the rest of the day to explore the island! If you wish to have a car full time to make use of your 2hr mid day break or evenings to do other activities we can assist you in finding affordable local car hire.

If you wish to arrive early or stay later we can assist you with finding suitable accommodations. There are options to stay at the Banyan Tree house resort or any of the other number of lovely hostels, hotels and B&B’s in the area.

Please note that the Bayan Tree House Centre does offer offer complimentary WIFI

The cost of the Trainings DOES NOT INCLUDE FOOD. You will need to arrange to do you own food shopping. Our Plantation House offers a wonderfully large kitchen that will allow you to cook your own meals.

Your own yoga mat

Optional – small medical kit (Paia has a dentist, chiropractor, health store and body workers but the closest pharmacy and hospital is 15 minutes away in Kahului). Although we have a First Aid kit at the studio you may need to bring your own supplies and don’t forget any personal medications you need. Please ensure you have medical insurance. You will be asked to sign an activities waiver and you will be fully responsible for your own actions when not with us.

Most of your day is spent inside the studio in class. You may want to bring a change of yoga clothes for your late afternoon practice. The weather is a mild all year but we do have winter rains so you may need to bring an umbrella, appropriate shoes for your days off and slightly warmer clothing (Makwao sits at a higher elevation and evenings can be refreshingly chilly!).

.

We have scheduled a mid day break during the hottest part of the day so that you may head to the beach (car hire required) or save on time and relax by the pool or in the garden. This means swimsuits, a beach towel, hat, sunscreen, etc are a must!.

On your day’s off you will be able to go further afield to enjoy more of the island beaches, swimming and hiking and so bring the right clothes and walking/hiking shoes with you (or you can shop from one of the great stores in Paia).

The first 2 weeks are primarily spent in the seat of the student although you will have opportunities to observe classes being taught. During the third week you will begin to practice teaching poses to each other and small sequences

The final week is when you will lead a class during your practicum exam. Your “students” will be your fellow trainees, and some invited members of the public. This class will be observed by your teacher. After class there will be time for feedback and review.

For an additional fee of $300 we can arrange a photographer to take pictures during your practicum class. This will then provide you with material to use on your resume, website, business cards and social media accounts.

You will be certified to teach Hatha Vinyasa Classes. You will be able to register with Yoga Alliance as a RYT- 200 member (Registered Yoga Teacher 200hr). Please note that your registration fee is not included in our rates.

If an illness, accident, or other covered unforeseen circumstance forces you to cancel or interrupt your travel plans, you face two potentially major financial losses—money invested in nonrefundable pre-payments and flights as well as medical expenses that in many instances may not be covered by health insurance. Travel insurance can be relatively inexpensive, especially when you consider how much you could lose if something goes wrong before or during your trip.
